Book: Small Great Things

Summary: When a newborn baby dies after a routine hospital procedure, there is no doubt about who will be held responsible: the nurse who had been banned from looking after him by his father.
What the nurse, her lawyer and the father of the child cannot know is how this death will irrevocably change all of their lives, in ways both expected and not.




What I Thought: Wow - awesome book although the ending was a bit neat for me but it did tackle some big issues.

Book: The Rooster Bar

Summary: Mark, Todd, and Zola came to law school to change the world, to make it a better place. But now, as third-year students, these close friends realize they have been duped. They all borrowed heavily to attend a third-tier for-profit law school so mediocre that its graduates rarely pass the bar exam, let alone get good jobs. And when they learn that their school is one of a chain owned by a shady New York hedge-fund operator who also happens to own a bank specializing in student loans, the three know they have been caught up in The Great Law School Scam.

But maybe there’s a way out. Maybe there’s a way to escape their crushing debt, expose the bank and the scam, and make a few bucks in the process. But to do so, they would first have to quit school. And leaving law school a few short months before graduation would be completely crazy, right? Well, yes and no . . .




What I Thought: Loved it! Awesome. I've missed a good legal thriller.

Book: Dairy Farmer's Daughter

Summary: In the heart of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland there is a vibrant community of farmers, artists and passionate people all trying to live the best lives they can. Love doesn’t always come easily but it is always worth fighting for.

Justin would have preferred to stay in the city and pretend it was an ordinary day. A day that didn’t include a funeral for a father he’d barely known...

Justin Wheeler is not a country boy. He could have been, if his mother had stayed married to his father and not moved back to the city when he was only a toddler. But now that his estranged father is dead and he has inherited the dairy farm, Justin finds himself considering if the life he is living is actually the life he wants.

Family means everything to Freya Montgomery. She loves living on the land and helping to grow the family business. She knows how important agriculture is to their small hinterland community, so when Justin arrives in town and is offered a generous price from a housing developer to buy his property, Freya must convince him not to accept the deal and instead lease the land to her family.

Will Justin choose riches over his heritage or will he find a love more valuable than all the money in the world?




What I Thought: Enjoyable but I prefer her outback ones more.

Book: The North Wind

Summary: It's Christmas in the outback town of Dungirri, and Angie Butler has returned to her old home, perhaps for the last time. Her life is elsewhere, and the ties that have for decades bound her family to the struggling town and its old hotel may soon be broken.
But the arrival of two strangers in town - Owen Caldwell and his grandfather - along with the hot, dry north wind herald a time of challenge and unexpected change.
Owen has no idea why his grandfather has quietly insisted on this Christmas visit to Dungirri, a town he's never been to. But the old doctor has a final quest, and as long-held secrets come to light and Owen and Angie use their skills to assist those in need, they both must decide where they belong, and where their future is


What I thought: A nice easy read - always good to revisit towns from previous books. Lacked any oomph though.

Book: Sisters & Brothers

Summary:
Emma, a nurse and busy mother of three, has always dreamed of having a sister.
Michelle, at 46, wonders if it's too late to fall in love and find her birth parents.
Sarah, career woman and perfectionist homemaker, struggles to keep up with the Joneses.
Bill, 72, feels left behind after the death of his adored wife.
Adam can't stop thinking about the father he never had.
These five very different people are all connected but separated by secrets from the past.


What I Thought: I enjoyed this - a nice connection story.

Book: Bush Doctors

What I Thought: Great little collection of stories - some incredible people in the bush.

Book: Heart of the Country

What I Thought: Loved it! Really great read. Will have a break before tackling #2 in the series.

Book: Alex Rider - Scorpia Rising

Summary: This gripping final mission brings together Alex Rider's old enemies to frame the teenage spy in an unstoppable plot of revenge, from which he can never return. Pursued from Europe to North Africa and Cairo's city of the dead - this is the twistiest and most deadly plot of any Alex Rider mission yet.




What I Thought: Loved it - had been waiting for the clone twist to show up! And excited that he has written a few more so I can keep reading the series.

Book: Where the River Runs

What I thought: Enjoyable but could have done with something more at the end.  

Book: The Wrong Callahan

As Linc, Griff and Cash form an uneasy triangle, each of them have personal demons to face before they can open their hearts.


What I Thought: Loved it but it lacked substance.

Bookgroup Book: Islamic Republic of Australia

Summary: In this funny and informative exploration of Islam in Australia, award-winning comedian and writer Sami Shah takes us behind the stereotypes and generalisations to find out who Australian Muslims are, how they live and what they think. Along the way we meet everyone from a woman who runs a ‘speed date a Muslim night’ to a conservative Islamic preacher, and to the founder of a group called Muslims for Progressive Values. The result is an entertaining and fascinating snapshot of Islam down under today.

What I Thought: This was done well and helped explain some things with some good humour thrown in. 

Book: Belle's Secret

What I thought: Loved this one. Off to get the rest in the series

Book: Alex Rider - Crocodile Tears

Summary: Targeted by a hitman and under threat of his past being exposed by the media, Alex reluctantly turns to MI6. But their help doesn't come cheap: they need Alex to spy on the activities at a GM crop plant. There he spots Desmond McCain, a high profile charity organizer, who realizes that Alex is on to him and the real plans for the money he's raising. What I Thought: Loved it. Yet again I've been sucked in. A few more left in the series. Bring it on!

Book: True Blue

What I Thought: Loved it - bring on book 3!

Book: Lawson's Bend

What I Thought: Sucked in from page one. Loved it. A very basic read with not much depth but that's ok!

Book: Return to Rosalee Station

Summary: After eight years of marriage, Sarah Walsh had thought she and Matt would be together forever. But when a fatal accident serves up the cruellest punishment any mother could face, their relationship falters. Sarah is helpless as Matt flies off the rails - she braves one last-ditch attempt to try and make him see they need to work together to get through the heartache. But will it be enough? And what about her - how does she go on alone?
Reeling from devastation and guilt, Matt gets the wakeup call he needs to save his marriage before it's too late. But the way forward is littered with obstacles, and he can see it's only by returning to the outback beauty and isolation of Rosalee Station that he has any chance to reclaim the man he once was. But will this separation end up costing him everything?


What I Thought: This one didn't quite hit the mark for me. A bit too depressing. I don't know why authors want to revisit their first blockbuster book and wreck it.

Book: The Country Girl

Summary: After landing a major cookbook deal, star food blogger Tash Ranger swaps city life for the family farm. But Tash’s homecoming is bittersweet, for now she can no longer avoid seeing her best friend Maddy, who was severely injured in a riding accident and unable to communicate. No one knows that Maddy and Tash had a deep falling out and with every visit Tash must pretend to be the friend everyone believes her to be.
Patrick Lawson, Maddy’s fiancé, battles despair and hope daily as Maddy lies imprisoned in her body, gradually losing his faith in her recovery. When Tash returns to Castlereagh Road with her joy and boundless appetite for life, he realises finally what his loved ones have been trying to tell him for months – that Maddy wouldn’t want him to throw his life away. It’s time to move on. But letting go is no easy feat, especially if moving on means Tash. He’s a country boy and she is a star on the rise with ambitions that could propel her out of reach.
Can these two friends step out of the shadow of Maddy’s tragic life and accept love, or is the past forever destined to dictate their future?


What I Thought: I enjoyed this. Easy reading.

Book: The Turnaround Treasure Shop

Summary: Fatalistic, long divorced and doing her best to give her children a good life, Lily works two jobs in her hometown of Swallow’s Fall, saving every spare cent for the day she can lease the empty corner shop on Main Street. She longs to open it as Turnaround Treasures, a second-hand shop bursting with rescued country curios—but there aren’t enough spare cents and Lily’s dream is slipping away. 

Ex-Navy diver Nick Barton arrived in Swallow’s Fall a year ago to quietly reunite himself with civvy life. Recognising an instant attraction to Lily, Nick backed away fast. He can’t be with her – but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t see her.

What I Thought: A nice sweet easy read. Almost finished the series. One to go!

Book: Outback Brides: Elsa's Stand

What I Thought: Loved it as it's set rather local to me so that always sucks me in!

Book: Front Page News

Summary: Cadet journalist Stacey McCallaghan is struggling to find anything newsworthy to report on in the small country town of Toomey. Front page stories consist of the price of cattle and lawn bowls results, and Stacey spends more time laying out the crossword than covering actual news.
Until the first dead body turns up.
While the local police fumble the investigation, ambitious Stacey is just pleased to have something other than cattle sales to write about. Plus, she now has an excuse to spend more time with the arrogantly attractive Detective Scott Fitzgerald. But when Stacey shows up at one crime scene too many, she moves to the top of the most wanted list. Stacey must uncover the truth before anyone else gets hurt – or the police put her behind bars.




What I Thought: A nice easy light hearted enjoyable read. Picked it up from display shelf at library.
